Alternatives To Academic Education

Academic education is becoming less and less popular among those who want to effectively combine  their schooling, career and personal life. One of the ways to reach high results in education with no harm to your other personal priorities in life is alternative education also known as non-traditional education.  It seems to me this is just a question of time when alternative types of education will become the primary forms of education. Opinions on what kind of school provides the best education differ considerably.  But the tendency is that more and more people these days are looking for more alternative ways of education.

Let’s start with distance education. Obviously, it’s the most popular form of education becuase the idea of getting needed knowledge and skills lying on the sofa in front of TV seems really tempring. But it comes to a serious problem when estimating students’ knowledge on a discipline and trying to be unbiased. No teacher in front of you means no reliable supervision.

If you don’t trust any type of education and have no personal life, auotdidacticism is the best option for you. Loneliness, integrity with educational web-sites or relaxing silence of the library auditorium may seem the best alternatives to noisy college rooms and annoying class-mates. I really doubt that you are an amiable person if you prefer this type of self-education, but still I do respect your concentration and self-motivation.

You like Discovery channel and have no patience to spend a minute moveless? Outdoor education is what you definitely need. Climbing, hiking, canoeing and alike activities seem much more exciting than additivity theorems and studies on metabolism. It is unlikely that you’ll ever receive the Nobel prize or chairman of the board position, but undoubtedly you will get a great life experience.

If you’re suspicious about everything you hear and don’t trust any research made by others, you can make the discoveries yourself. This type of self-education is called experiential education and enables students to make experiments and variable research themselves. One of the widely adopted forms of experiential education is service to others. You will like like it if you are an altruist by nature and all about to socialize.

No matter what type of person you are, you can always pick an educational option that suits you. Anyway, somehow now we can be sure only in Aristotle’s words: “The educated differs from the uneducated as much as the living from the dead”.
