E-retailers naturally want more of Internet users to go to the Web for shopping. However, most Internet users still prefer to idle online. In accordance with RuderFinn survey all US Internet users went online to pass the time in the second quarter of 2009. Among other the most popular online activities are education, staying connected with others and researching.
Moreover, Ruder Finn divided users’ online activities into six categories (activities are listed from most common to least ones):
• Learning
• Having fun
• Socializing
• Self expressing
• Advocating
• Doing business
• Shopping
Adults Are Online
Men are normally more likely to do business online and stay informed while women prefer to go online for socializing and expressing themselves. Nearly three quarters of young adults from 18 to 29 have posted their opinions on social media websites and half of them played online games.
Seniors Are Online
Seniors prefer to manage their finances through the agency of Internet technologies and more than two-thirds of seniors go online to be a part of community. Nearly three quarters of all Internet users go online to be a part of community which indicates growing importance of social networking on our lifestyles.
Kids Are Online
Immensely growing population of Generation Y involves people of all cultures, races and ages. Kids are no longer an exception. I will not start judging whether this is good or bad for children, but the fact is that the number of child Internet users in the US is growing faster than total Internet users.
According to the NetView report from Nielsen the population of US online users ages from 2 to 11 is about16 million. Moreover, the amount of time spent online by US children has also increased by 63% during the past five years.
By the way, Nielsen also reported that Pokemon and Barbie are the top online video brands for boys and girls respectively.
