Today is the Birthday of Internet
Today is the birthday of the Internet. The Internet is now 40 and I thought it would be interesting to outline the stages the Internet has come through before converting into an imperative of our everyday life.

- In 1969, September 2 the first server ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) was installed in the California University. Two computers transmitted meaningless test data to each other through the three-meter cord. In a short period of time APRANET network started being used by specialists in various scientific fields.
- In 1971 was finished the development of the first program to transmit electronic mails. This program became extremely popular at once.
- In 1973 the network was linked up with foreign organizations of UK and Norway through the transatlantic telephone cable. Since then the network has become international.
- In the 70-s the network was primarily used to transmit e-mails. This is when the first e-mail lists, news groups and notice boards were created.
- In 1983 ARPANET started using TCP/IP protocol which is effectively used even today for network integration. In 1983 the word “Internet” was first used to name the ARPANET network.
- In 1984 the DNS (Domain Name System) was created.
- In 1984 the main ARPANET’s competitor NSF was brought into play (National Science Foundation Network). With the course of time NSF, due to its better capacity, overshadowed ARPANET and the word “Internet” was referred mainly to NSFNet.
- In 1988 Internet Relay Chat protocol was launched that allowed users to communicate in real-time mode.
- In 1989 the concept of the Internet the way we know it today was introduced. Since then HTTP protocol, HTML language and URI identifier have been created.
- In 1990 ARPAANET network ceased to exist losing competition to NSFNet.
- In 1991 the Internet became publicly available
- In 1993 the fist browser NSCA Mosaic was introduced and the popularity of the Internet started rising extremely fast.
- In 2008 the number of the Internet users reached 1,4 billion people
In total, during these 40 years, and especially the last 15 of them, the Internet has become an imperative of our everyday life, slowly changing into the addiction and the thing we simply can’t imagine our lives without.
